CAL THOMAS COMMENTARY JULY 26, 2021
DURING MY YEARS AS A REPORTER, ONE OF MY ASSIGNMENTS WAS TO COVER THE SPACE PROGRAM
IN HOUSTON. I MET A LOT OF THE ASTRONAUTS AND THEIR FAMILIES AND IT WAS ALWAYS A THRILL TO
WATCH THOSE SATURN 5 ROCKETS BLAST OFF FROM CAPE CANAVERAL, ESPECIALLY APOLLO 11, WHEN
NEIL ARMSTRONG AND BUZZ ALDRIN WALKED ON THE MOON. ONE BILLION PEOPLE WATCHED
WORLDWIDE. THAT WAS 52 YEARS AGO THIS MONTH.
I RECALL THE THRILL WHEN FRANK BORMAN READ THE CREATION STORY FROM GENESIS ON
CHRISTMAS EVE, 1968, WHILE HE AND HIS COLLEAGUES ORBITED THE MOON.
I THOUGHT OF ALL THAT AND MORE THE LAST TWO WEEKS AS FREDDIE BRANSON AND JEFF BEZOS
AND COMPANY ROCKETED TO THE EDGE OF SPACE IN SEPARATE FLIGHTS. I ALSO REMEMBERED SOVIET
COSMONAUT YURI GAGARIN SAYING WHEN HE WENT UP HE LOOKED FOR GOD, DIDN’T SEE HIM AND
CONCLUDED HE DOESN’T EXIST. AND THEN I RECALLED JACK LOUSMA, A CHRISTIAN, SAYING WENT HE
WENT UP – TWICE – HE SAW GOD EVERYWHERE AND QUOTED FROM PSALM 19: “THE HEAVENS ARE TELLING
THE GLORY OF GOD.” IT ALL DEPENDS ON YOUR PERSPECTIVE…AND FAITH. I’M CAL THOMAS.
