HISTORY AND THE RELIGIOUS LEFT

CAL THOMAS COMMENTARY JULY 20, 2021

RECENT DEVELOPMENTS IN CUBA WARRANT A LOOK BACK TO CONTRAST WHAT THE RELIGIOUS LEFT SAID THEN ABOUT THE COMMUNIST DICTATORSHIP OF FIDEL CASTRO AND WHAT THEY ARE SAYING NOW. FEW HAVE KEPT UP AS WELL ABOUT CUBA AND THE DETERIORATION OF THE RELIGIOUS LEFT AS MARK TOOLEY, WHO HEADS THE INSTITUTE ON RELIGION AND DEMOCRACY BASED IN WASHINGTON.

IN THE EARLY 80S, TOOLEY WRITES THAT SOME OF AMERICA’S GREATEST DENOMINATIONS BACKED COMMUNIST REGIMES. THEY PRAISED CASTRO, AND THE SANDINISTAS IN NICARAGUA. THEY EVEN DENOUNCED AMERICA AS THE CHIEF VILLAIN OF THE WORLD. REMEMBER?

CHURCH LEADERS VISITED MOSCOW AND OTHER COMMUNIST CAPITALS. THEY REFUSED TO DENOUNCE NORTH KOREA AND IGNORED HUMAN RIGHTS ABUSES, INCLUDING THE PERSECUTION OF CHRISTIANS. THESE INCLUDED METHODISTS, EPISCOPALIANS, PRESBYTERIANS AND LUTHERANS. AS TOOLEY NOTES, “MOST OF THESE ONCE-GREAT DENOMINATIONS ARE NOW DIMINISHED, CAUSED BY LEFTIST RADICAL POLITICS AND UNBIBLICAL THEOLOGY.

THERE’S A LESSON THERE, BUT HAVING EMBRACED AND CONFORMED THEMSELVES TO THE FALLEN WORLD, I DOUBT THEY WILL LEARN IT. I’M CAL THOMAS.
