A DUTY TO DIE?

CAL THOMAS COMMENTARY AUGUST 3, 2021

FORMER COLORADO DEMOCRATIC GOVERNOR RICHARD LAMM DIED LAST WEEK. IN 1984 HE UTTERED

A SENTENCE THAT WILL LIVE IN INFAMY. HE SAID THE ELDERLY HAVE A “DUTY TO DIE AND GET OUT OF THE

WAY” FOR A YOUNGER GENERATION.

THE COMMENT BROUGHT A STORM OF CRITICISM FROM THE PRO-LIFE COMMUNITY. LAMM TRIED TO

EXPLAIN THAT MODERN MACHINERY AND TRANSPLANTS WERE ARTIFICIALLY EXTENDING LIVES AND

KEEPING KIDS FROM BUILDING REASONABLE LIVES.

LAMM’S “EXPLANATION” DID NOT MOLLIFY PRO-LIFERS, NOR SHOULD IT HAVE. IT REFLECTED A

GENERAL DECLINE IN RESPECT FOR HUMAN LIFE THAT HAS NOW LED TO SHOOTINGS IN OUR MAJOR CITY

STREETS AND AN ATTITUDE THAT VALUES MONEY AND THINGS OVER INDIVIDUALS.

IN THE FILM “LALA LAND” THERE IS THIS LINE ABOUT THE CITY OF LOS ANGELES. IT’S A PLACE “WHERE

PEOPLE WORSHIP EVERYTHING, BUT VALUE NOTHING.” PONDER THAT. WE WORSHIP EVERYTHING, BUT

VALUE NOTHING.

I HAVE OFTEN QUOTED G.K. CHESTERTON WHO SAID, “THE DANGER WHEN MEN STOP BELIEVING IN

GOD IS NOT THAT THEY WILL BELIEVE IN NOTHING, BUT THAT THEY’LL BELIEVE IN ANYTHING.” ABRAHAM

LINCOLN BLAMED LACK OF FAITH IN GOD FOR THE CIVIL WAR. THAT SEEMS TO DESCRIBE RICHARD LAMM’S

BELIEFS. I’M CAL THOMAS.
