Discrimination in NYC Public Schools

CAL THOMAS COMMENTARY OCTOBER 11, 2021

IN ONE OF HIS FINAL ACTS AS MAYOR OF NEW YORK CITY, BILL DIBLASIO HAS ORDERED THE

ELIMINATION OF THE GIFTED AND TALENTED PROGRAM FOR PUBLIC SCHOOL STUDENTS. DIBLASIO SAYS

THE PROGRAM DISCRIMINATES AGAINST BLACK AND HISPANIC STUDENTS BECAUSE IT OVERWHELMINGLY

IS MADE-UP OF WHITE AND ASIAN KIDS.

THE MAYOR SAYS CHILDREN CURRENTLY IN THE GIFTED AND TALENTED PROGRAM WILL BE ALLOWED

TO FINISH BUT NO NEW STUDENTS WILL BE ADMITTED. INSTEAD, ALL STUDENTS WILL RECEIVE WHAT HE

CALLS “ENHANCED EDUCATION” NEAR THE END OF ELEMENTARY SCHOOL.

WHY ISN’T EDUCATION ENHANCED ALL THE TIME? WHY ENHANCE IT NEAR THE END OF ELEMENTARY

SCHOOL INSTEAD OF AT THE START?

WHY ARE BLACKS AND HISPANICS STEREOTYPED AS UNDER ACHIEVERS? WHY NOT CONCENTRATE

ON THOSE WHO ARE SUCCEEDING AS MODELS FOR THE REST?

SCHOOL CHOICE IS THE ANSWER. THE CHILDREN’S SCHOLARSHIP FUND IN NEW YORK HELPS BLACK

AND HISPANIC KIDS OUT OF POORLY PERFORMING SCHOOLS. THEY GET A PRIVATE AND CHRISTIAN

EDUCATION. THE RESULT? MORE THAN 90 PERCENT GRADUATE, NOT ONLY FROM HIGH SCHOOL, BUT FROM

COLLEGE? WHY WON’T DIBLASIO OFFER EDUCATION CHOICE? ANSWER: BECAUSE THE TEACHERS UNIONS

WANT IT THIS WAY. MINORITY KIDS ARE THE ONES WHO SUFFER. GO TO SCHOLARSHIPFUND.ORG FOR MORE INFORMATION.
