CAL THOMAS COMMENTARY JANUARY 6, 2022
THE NEW MAYOR OF NEW YORK CITY, ERIC ADAMS, WAS SUPPOSED TO USHER IN AN ERA OF TOUGH ON
CRIME POLICIES. MAYBE HE WILL, BUT HE WON’T BE GETTING HELP FROM MANHATTAN’S NEW DISTRICT
ATTORNEY, ALVIN BRAGG.
BRAGG HAS ORDERED PROSECUTORS TO STOP SEEKING PRISON SENTENCES FOR MANY CRIMINALS AND
TO DOWNGRADE FELONY CHARGES IN CASES INCLUDING ARMED ROBBERIES AND DRUG DEALING. BRAGG
SAYS HIS OFFICE “WILL NOT SEEK A (PRISON) SENTENCE” EXCEPT FOR PEOPLE COMMITTING HOMICIDES
AND A HANDFUL OF OTHER CASES, INCLUDING DOMESTIC VIOLENCE FELONIES, SOME SEX CRIMES AND
PUBLIC CORRUPTION.
HAS BRAGG NOT BEEN WATCHING WHAT HIS FELLOW PROGRESSIVE DA’S AND PROSECUTORS HAVE
DONE IN OTHER CITZIES – THE LOOTING, THE RIOTING, AND OTHER BREACHES OF THE PEACE? CRIMINALS
MUST BE LICKING THEIR CHOPS IN MANHATTAN, KNOWING THEY WILL BE ABLE TO GET AWAY WITH ALL
SORTS OF LAWLESSNESS AND NEVER BE PROSECUTED.
ASSISTANT DA’S MUST ALSO CONSIDER THE “IMPACT OF INCARCERATION,” INCLUDING WHETHER IT
INCREASES PUBLIC SAFETY. GIVEN THOSE LET OUT OF JAIL WHO COMMIT NEW CRIMES, JAIL DOES
PROTECT THE PUBLIC.
THIS IS THE UGLY SIDE OF PROGRRESSIVISM. IT IS WHY LAW AND ORDER IS GOING TO BE A MAJOR
CAMPAIGN ISSUE IN THE NOVEMBER ELECTION. I’M CAL THOMAS.
