MORE LAWS AREN’T ENOUGH

CAL THOMAS COMMENTARY MAY 18, 2022

IN THE AFTERMATH OF THE MASS SHOOTING IN BUFFALO, NEW YORK, WE ARE HEARING THE PREDICTABLE CALLS FOR MORE GUN LAWS. THE PROBLEM IS THAT CURRENT LAWS WERE NOT ENFORCED.

THE ALLEGED SHOOTER RECEIVED MENTAL HEALTH TREATMENT IN A HOSPITAL AND YET THAT INFORMATION WAS NOT AVAILABLE TO THE GUN SHOP OWNER WHO SOLD HIM THE GUN.

RELATIVES BLAME COVID AND THE KID’S ISOLATION, BUT DIDN’T PARENTS KNOW WHAT HE WAS DOING? HE LEFT THEM A SUICIDE NOTE. DID THEY READ IT BEFORE THE SHOOTING? THE FBI IS INVESTIGATING.

AS A NEW YORK POST EDITORIAL SAID: “ONE THINGS’S CLEAR…(HE) SHOULD NEVER HAVE BEEN ABLE TO GET HIS HANDS ON THE BUSHMASTER ASSAULT RIFLE.”

WHILE NEW YORK’S GOVERNOR PROMISES TO CLOSE LOOPHOLES IN THE LAW THAT CURRENTLY ALLOW SOMEONE TO BUY LARGE-SCALE MAGAZINES WITHOUT A DATE OF MANUFACTURE, IT’S ONLY A SMALL STEP. LARGE SCALE MAGAZINES ARE ILLEGAL IN NEW YORK, YET WITHOUT THAT INFORMATION PEOPLE CAUGHT WITH THEM USUALLY CAN’T BE PROSECUTED.

STILL, ENOUGH LAWS EXIST, AS DOES SIGNALING OF INTENTIONS AND COMMON SENSE, THAT MIGHT HAVE PREVENTED THE SLAUGHTER. POLITICIANS WILL POSTURE, BUT POSTURING WON’T STOP FUTURE SHOOTINGS. WE’VE HEARD IT ALL BEFORE. I’M CAL THOMAS.
