INFLATION AND THE TRIBULATION

CAL THOMAS COMMENTARY JUNE 16, 2022

WITH GAS AND FOOD PRICES AND INFLATION AT RECORD LEVELS AND RISING, I THOUGHT OF REVELATION 6 IN WHICH JOHN HEARS THE VOICES OF FOUR LIVING CREATURES MAKING AN ECONOMIC STATEMENT ABOUT THE HIGH COST OF WHEAT AND BARLEY, BUT NOT TOUCHING THE OIL AND WINE. SOME PEOPLE HAVE TRANSLATED THIS: “A PIECE OF BREAD COULD BUY A BAG OF GOLD.”

HERE’S WHAT ONE ONLINE BIBLE COMMENTATOR SAYS.

SYMBOLICALLY, THIS MESSAGE IN VERSE SIX ABOUT A DENARIUS, WHICH WAS ABOUT A DAY’S WAGES THEN, WOULD BUY JUST ENOUGH GRAIN TO KEEP A PERSON ALIVE. AND YET WAR AND FAMINE SEEM TO GIVE WAY TO INFLATION DUE TO SUPPLY AND DEMAND. SOUNDS CONTEMPORARY, DOESN’T IT?

THE IMPLICATION SEEMS TO BE THAT MOST PEOPLE IN THIS PART OF THE TRIBULATION ARE STRUGGLING JUST TO MEET BASIC SURVIVAL NEEDS.

ACCORDING TO REVEALTION 13:16-17, THE FALSE PROPHET IN JERUSALEM WILL CONTROL COMMERCE DURING THE TRIBULATION, MAKING IT VERY DIFFICULT FOR PEOPLE TO BUY EVEN BASIC COMMODITIES.

THE BIBLE IS SO MANY THINGS. IT INSTRUCTS US ABOUT GOD, OUR SINFUL NATURE, OUR NEED OF SALVATION THROUGH JESUS CHRIST. IT IS ALSO ABOUT HISTORY AND THE FUTURE. READ IT WITH ALL OF THESE IN MIND. I’M CAL THOMAS.
