KANSAS AND ABORTION

CAL THOMAS COMMENTARY AUGUST 8, 2022

AS YOU MAY HAVE HEARD BY NOW, A MAJORITY OF KANSAS VOTERS HAVE REJECTED A PROPOSED CONSTITUTIONAL AMENDMENT THAT WOULD HAVE REMOVED LANGUAGE ENSURING ABORTION ON DEMAND IN THAT STATE. THE PROPOSED AMENDMENT IS THE FIRST TEST OF VOTER PREFERENCES FOLLOWING THE SUPREME COURT’S DECISION OVERTURNING ROE VS. WADE.

A BALLOT QUESTION, KNOWN AS THE “VALUE THEM BOTH AMENDMENT” ASKED VOTERS TO DECIDE WHETHER THE STATE’S CONSTITUTION SHOULD CONTINUE TO PROTECT THE RIGHT TO AN ABORTION AND WHETHER THEY WOULD BE OK TO PUT THE ISSUE IN THE HANDS OF THE REPUBLICAN LEGISLATURE, WHICH WOULD LIKELY HAVE PRODUCED A DIFFERENT RESULT.

IT WILL BE INTERESTING TO SEE IF THE LEGISLATURE DECIDES TO PASS A LAW RESTRICTING ABORTIONS IN KANSAS. THAT IS WHAT THE SUPREME COURT DECISION ALLOWED, FOR STATE REPRESENTAIVES ELECTED BY VOTERS TO DECIDE THE ISSUE.

ABORTION CANNOT BE SEEN AS SEPARATE FROM A GENERAL DECLINE IN THE FEAR OF GOD AND A SET OF SHARED MORAL VALUES. WHEN ONE BELIEVES IN EVOLUTION AND SEES HUMANITY AS ONLY A SLIGHTLY MORE COMPLEX LIFE FORM THAN ANIMALS, THEN ANYTHING IS POSSIBLE.

WATCH FOR OTHER STATES NOW TO MAKE UP THEIR MINDS ON THE NATION’S MOST IMPORTANT ISSUE. I’M CAL THOMAS.
