HOGAN LEAVES WITH A SURPLUS, BUT…

CAL THOMAS COMMENTARY DECEMBER 27, 2022

OUTGOING MARYLAND GOVERNOR LARRY HOGAN HAS SAT FOR AN INTERVIEW WITH THE WASHINGTON TIMES. THE CONTRAST BETWEEN HIS TWO-TERM ADMINISTRATION IN A HEAVILY DEMOCRAT STATE AND WHAT IS LIKELY TO COME WITH A NEW DEMOCRAT GOVERNOR COULD NOT BE MORE STARK.

HOGAN WILL LEAVE OFFICE IN JANUARY WITH A BUDGET SURPLUS OF $2.5 BILLION AND A $3 BILLION RAINY DAY FUND. HE EXPECTS HIS SUCCESSOR, DEMOCRAT WES MORE, ALONG WITH AN ALL-DEMOCRAT LEGISLATURE, TO SPEND DOWN THAT SURPLUS BECAUSE THAT’S WHAT DEMOCRATS DO – THEY TAX AND SPEND.

WHAT MYSTIFIES ME IS THE IGNORANCE OF THE VAST AMERICAN ELECTORATE. YES, MARYLAND REPUBLICANS NOMINATED A TRUMP-ENDORSED CANDIDATE WHO COULD NOT AND DID NOT WIN. BUT ON A LARGER SCALE, PRESIDENT BIDEN IS DEEPLY UNPOPULAR AND A LARGE MAJORITY BELIEVE THE COUNTRY IS HEADED IN THE WRONG DIRECTION. YET VOTERS PUT THESE PEOPLE IN OFFICE ANYWAY. DO THEY EXPECT DIFFERENT OUTCOMES?

A LOT OF IT IS TRIBALISM, AS I’VE SAID BEFORE. SOME WILL ALWAYS VOTE FOR THEIR PARTY CANDIDATE OVER THE OTHER PARTY’S CANDIDATE. NEVER MIND THE RESULTS. THAT MUST CHANGE IF AMERICA IS TO GET BACK ON TRACK IN 2023 AND BEYOND. I’M CAL THOMAS.
