CAL THOMAS COMMENTARY FEBRUARY 14, 2023
IT’S VALENTINE’S DAY AND YOU KNOW WHAT THAT MEANS. OR DO YOU?
V-DAY ORIGINATED LIKE SO MANY OTHER EVENTS AS A CHRISTIAN FEAST DAY TO HONOR ONE OR TWO EARLY CHRISTIAN MARTYRS NAMED SAINT VALENTINE. THROUGH LATER FOLK TRADITIONS IT HAS BECOME A SIGNIFICANT CULTURAL, RELIGIOUS AND COMMERCIAL – ESPECIALLY COMMERCIAL – CELEBRATION OF ROMANCE AND LOVE IN MANY REGIONS OF THE WORLD.
HARMLESS ENOUGH. THE GREETING CARD, FLOWER AND RESTAURANT INDUSTRIES ARE HAPPY ABOUT IT, AS THEY SHOULD BE. THE DAY RETURNS HUGE PROFITS FOR THEM AND WOE TO THE MAN WHO FORGETS.
IN OUR MODERN CULTURE, LOVE IS A FEELING. IN MY VIEW IT IS A COMMITMENT. FEELINGS COME AND GO. A COMMITMENT SHOULD LAST AND REFLECTS ON THE CHARACTER OF THE ONE MAKING IT.
SCRIPTURE HAS A LOT TO SAY ABOUT REAL LOVE. IT SAYS GOD IS LOVE. HE DEFINES THE WORD. 1 CORININTHIANS 13 IS A FAMOUS CHAPTER ABOUT WHAT LOVE IS.
AND THEN THERE IS JOHN 3:16: “FOR GOD SO LOVED THE WORLD THAT HE GAVE HIS ONLY SON; THAT WHOEVER BELIEVES IN HIM SHOULD NOT PERISH, BUT HAVE ETERNAL LIFE.” THAT’S LOVE DEMONSTRATED.
QUESTION: HOW SHOULD YOU AND I RESPOND TO SUCH LOVE? I’M CAL THOMAS.
