CAL THOMAS COMMENTARY FOR APRIL 6, 2023

FOLLOWING UP ON YESTERDAY’S COMMENTARY, THE INDICTMENT OF DONALD TRUMP ON 34 FELONY CHARGES, WHICH ARE BASICALLY THE SAME, HAS BEEN DENOUNCED BY TOP LEGAL SCHOLARS AND EVEN BY MANY TRUMP OPPONENTS. JONATHAN TURLEY, LAW PROFESSOR AT GEORGE WASHINGTON UNIVERSITY, LIKENED IT TO A SLURPEE – ALL TASTE AND NO NUTRITIONAL VALUE. ALAN DERSHOWITZ, WHO SAYS HE VOTED AGAINST TRUMP BOTH TIMES, OPPOSES THE INDICTMENT. FORMER TRUMP RIVALS JEB BUSH AND MITT ROMNEY HAVE DENOUNCED IT. FORMER ATTORNEY GENERAL BILL BARR HAS CALLED IT “A PATHETICALLY WEAK CASE.”

THE NEXT HEARING IS SET FOR EARLY DECEMBER WHERE MOTIONS TO DISMISS WILL BE HEARD. THE JUDGE HAS SET JANUARY FOR A POSSIBLE TRIAL, RIGHT AT THE START OF PRIMARY SEASON.

TRUMP COULD WELL BE THE NOMINEE OF THE REPUBLICAN PARTY FOR 2024, BUT IT IS UNLIKELY HE CAN WIN THE GENERAL ELECTION WITHOUT INDEPENDENT VOTERS, WHO ARE NOW THE MAJOR DECIDERS IN SWING STATES. ARE TRUMP SUPPORTERS WILLING TO LOSE ANOTHER ELECTION, OR WILL THEY PICK SOMEONE WITH TRUMP’S POLITICIES BUT WITHOUT HIS GROWING BAGGAGE.

THAT IS THE QUESTION AND THE ANSWER WILL COME SOON ENOUGH. I’M CAL THOMAS.
