DISCRIMINATION IS STILL DISCRIMINATION

CAL THOMAS COMMENTARY MAY 25, 2023

A FEDERAL APPEALS COURT HAS UPHELD A DIVERSITY POLICY AT THE THOMAS JEFFERSON HIGH SCHOOL FOR SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY IN FAIRFAX COUNTY, VIRGINIA. THE SCHOOL HAD CUT ADMISSIONS FOR ACCOMPLISHED ASIAN AMERICAN STUDENTS BY 26 PERCENT.

THE RULING WAS 2-1 WITH THE MAJORITY SAYING THE SCHOOL WAS TRYING TO BOOST DIVERSITY AMONG ITS INCOMING STUDENTS BASED ON GEOGRAPHY AND SOCIO-ECONOMIC STATUS AND ANY EFFECT ON THE RACIAL BALANCE WAS SECONDARY.

SURE IT IS. HOW ABOUT BOOSTING MERIT? DIVERSITY, INCLUSION AND EQUITY DOES NOT CREATE SMARTER STUDENTS. IT DOES CREATE A SENSE OF ENTITLEMENT BASED ON SKIN COLOR, NOT CHARACTER.

CONSIDER THE DEFINITION OF THE WORD DISCRIMINATION AND SEE WHETHER IT FITS WHAT THE APPEALS COURT HAS DONE: “TREATMENT OR CONSIDERATION OF, OR MAKING A DISTINCTION IN FAVOR OR AGAINST, A PERSON OR THING BASED ON THE GROUP, CLASS OR CATEGORY TO WHICH THAT PERSON OR THING BELONGS, RATHER THAN INDIVIDUAL MERIT.”

THAT DEFINITION CLEARLY EXPOSES WHAT THOMAS JEFFERSON SCHOOL HAS DONE. RATHER THAN FOCUS ON MERIT AND ACHIEVEMENT, THE SCHOOL INDULGES IN VIRTUE SIGNALING . I PREDICT THE SUPREME COURT WILL OVERTURN THIS DECISION. I’M CAL THOMAS.
