Crime is back as an issue

CAL THOMAS COMMENTARY OCTOBER 2, 2023

THE YEAR WAS 1968 AND CRIME WAS A MAJOR POLITICAL ISSUE, ESPECIALLY AFTER THE RIOTS AT THE DEMOCRATIC CONVENTION IN CHICAGO. THIS YEAR, CRIME IS BACK, ALONG WITH THE OPEN BORDER – ANOTHER CRIME – AS AN ISSUE IN THIS CAMPAIGN.

LAST WEEK IN PHILADELPHIA, MOBS OF PEOPLE, ORGANIZED ON SOCIAL MEDIA, BROKE INTO STORES AND LOOTED THEM OF ELECTRONICS, SHOES, LIQUOR, DRUGS AND OTHER GOODS.

POLICE CALLED THEM “CRIMINAL OPPORTUNISTS.” THE LOOTING AND DESTRUCTION CAME AFTER A JUDGE DISMISSED ALL CRIMINAL CHARGES AGAINST A FORMER POLICE OFFICER WHO HAD SHOT A MAN NAMED EDIE IRIZARRY LAST MONTH.

ONE OF THE LOOTERS CLAIMED IT WAS THE ONLY WAY PEOPLE WILL HEAR THEM. POLICE HAD ADVANCE WARNINGS THIS WAS GOING TO HAPPEN BUT WERE EITHER ILL-PREPARED OR REFUSED TO ENGAGE THE CRIMINALS. WHO CAN BLAME THEM THE WAY POLICE ARE TREATED?

MANY STORES ARE CLOSING AROUND THE COUNTRY BECAUSE OF THIS LAWLESSNESS. MOST OF THE LOOTERS ARE BLACK AND THEY ARE COSTING BLACK PEOPLE JOBS INSIDE THESE STORES. THEY DON’T CARE. WHEN THERE IS NO AUTHORITY THAT IS RESPECTED IN A NATION, THE PEOPLE RUN WILD, TO PARAPHRASE A PROVERB. THIS IS WHAT WE ARE NOW SEEING. OUR NATION HAS BEEN TURNED UPSIDE DOWN. I’M CAL THOMAS.
