CONGRESS AND PRIORITIES

CAL THOMAS COMMENTARY NOVEMBER 1, 2023

CONGRESS RETURNS TO WORK TODAY – CORRECTION – CONGRESS RETURNS TO WASHINGTON. IT’S DEBATABLE WHETHER MEMBERS DO THE WORK THEY SHOULD BE DOING ON OUR BEHALF RATHER THAN SERVE THEIR POLITICAL INTERESTS. I’M BETTING ON THE LATTER.

ALREADY THE NEWLY ELECTED HOUSE SPEAKER, MIKE JOHNSON, WHO HAS MADE AID TO ISRAEL A PRIORITY, IS BEING CRITICIZED BY SOME CONSERVATIVES FOR NOT TACKLING THE BORDER FIRST. THIS IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN POLITICAL POSTURING AND ACTUAL ACCOMPLISHMENT. JOHNSON KNOWS AND WE SHOULD KNOW THAT WITH A DEMOCRAT SENATE AND WHITE HOUSE THE BORDER WILL REMAIN OPEN UNTIL WE GET A NEW PRESIDENT WHO WANTS IT CLOSED AND THE ILLEGALS DEPORTED.

POLITICS, ALTHOUGH MESSY AT TIMES, IS THE ART OF THE POSSIBLE. SOME OF US THINK IT SHOULD BE THE WAY WE WANT IT, BUT IF THAT’S NOT POSSIBLE – AND IT ISN’T AT THE MOMENT – THE DOABLE IS WHAT’S NEEDED. IT DOES NO GOOD TO PASS LEGISLATION IN THE HOUSE IF IT CAN’T GET THROUGH THE SENATE AND BE SIGNED INTO LAW. ELECTIONS HAVE CONSEQUENCES AND WE ARE SUFFERING THE CONSEQUENCES OF HAVING ELECTED WHAT WE NOW EXPERIENCE,

REMEMBER THAT AS THE NEXT ELECTION IS ONE YEAR AND A FEW DAYS AWAY FROM TODAY. I’M CAL THOMAS.

Any thoughts on giving Democrats funding for Ukraine in exchange for better border control? As you said, politics is the art of the possible.
