AN ABORTION EXCEPTION

Cal Thomas Commentary December 12, 2023

PERHAPS YOU’VE HEARD OF THE ABORTION CONTROVERSY IN TEXAS.

KATIE COX, WHO IS TWENTY WEEKS PREGNANT, SOUGHT AN ABORTION BECAUSE SHE LEARNED HER BABY WAS DIAGNOSED WITH FULL TRISOMY 18, A CHROMOSOMAL ABNORMALITY THAT IS ALMOST ALWAYS FATAL BEFORE BIRTH, OR SOON AFTER. TEXAS HAS A 6-WEEK ABORTION BAN. A JUDGE RULED SHE COULD GO THROUGH WITH AN ABORTION. THE TEXAS SUPREME COURT LAST WEEK TEMPORARLY BLOCKED THAT DECISION.

PREDICTABLY, THE ABORTION FOR ANY REASON CROWD IS ALL OVER THE CASE, SAYING THIS IS WHAT HAPPENS WHEN LAWS ARE PASSED BANNING ABORTIONS. NOT EXACTLY. COX, HAS REPORTEDLY SAID SHE WANTS TO BE A MOTHER, BUT DOESN’T WANT TO CARRY A DEAD BABY. THE ABORTION RIGHTS PEOPLE WANT TO USE EXTREME CASES LIKE THIS TO JUSTIFY KILLING HEALTHY BABIES AT ANY STAGE. SOME EVEN MORE RADICAL PEOPLE THINK IT’S OK TO KILL A DELIVERED BABY IF THE WOMAN CHANGES HER MIND.

IF A DOCTOR OTHER THAN AN ABORTIONIST CONFIRMS THE DIAGNOSIS, OF COURSE COX SHOULD BE ALLOWED TO TERMINATE HER PREGNANCY. THE TEXAS LAW SHOULD BE REVISED TO INCLUDE THIS EXCEPTION. I’M CAL THOMAS.
