A BAD BET

CAL THOMAS COMENTARY MARCH 29, 2024

GAMBLING HAS ALWAYS BEEN ONE OF THE WORST VICES. WHEN THE SUPREME COURT ALLOWED SPORTS GAMBLING TO TAKE PLACE YOU COULD PREDICT IT WOULD ONLY BE A MATTER OF TIME BEFORE BAD THINGS BEGAN TO HAPPEN. THAT TIME IS NOW.

AS THE WALL STREET JOURNAL REPORTS: “AMERICAN SPORTS SPENT MORE THAN A CENTURY KEEPING GAMBLING AS FAR A WAY AS POSSIBLE, IN THE NAME OF PRESERVING COMPETITIVE PURITY AND REPELLING SCANDAL AND CORRUPTION. “

THE JOURNAL WRITES ABOUT “AN AVALANCHE OF GAMBLING SCANDALS.” EARLIER THIS MONTH, THE NATIONAL BASKETBALL ASOCIATION HEARD COMPLAINTS FROM PLAYERS AND A HEAD COACH ABOUT THE GROWING INFLUENCE OF BETTING AND ITS POTENTIAL DANGERS. IT’S WORSE FOR THE COLLEGE BASKETBALL PLAYERS INVOLVED IN MARCH MADNESS, WHICH HAS BECOME THE BIGGEST BETTING EVENT IN THE COUNTRY.

INCREASED INSTANCES OF ILLEGAL BETTING ARE ALSO OCCURRING IN MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL.

LOS ANGELES DODGERS SUPERSTAR SHOHEI OHTANI, THE HIGHEST PAID ATHLETE IN U.S. SPORTS HISTORY, FOUND HIMSELF EMBROILED IN A BETTING SCANDAL STEMMING FROM HIS LONGTIME INTERPRETER’S ASSOCIATION WITH AN ALLEGED ILLEGAL BOOKIE WHO IS UNDER FEDERAL INVESTIGATION. OHTANI HAS DENIED BETTING ON SPORTS AND ACCUSED HIS INTERPRETER OF STEALING MILLIONS FROM HIM. ALL AROUND, SPORTS GAMBLING IS A BAD BET. I’M CAL THOMAS.
