PLEA DEALS FOR 9-11 TERRORISTS

CAL THOMAS COMMENTARY AUGUST 2, 2024

THE ACCUSED MASTERMIND OF THE TERRORIST ATTACK ON AMERICA ON SEPTEMBER 11, 2001 AND HIS TWO COLLEAGUES HAVE AGREED TO PLEA DEALS THAT WILL SENTENCE THEM TO LIFE IN PRISON. KHALID SHEIK MOHAMMED AND TWO OTHERS ARE EXPECTED TO ENTER THE PLEAS NEXT WEEK AT THE GUANTANAMO BAY, CUBA MILITARY COMMISSION.

THE FAMILIES OF THE HEROIC FIRST RESPONDERS WHO DIED THAT DAY, ALONG WITH 3000 OTHERS, HAVE CRITICIZED THE PLEA DEAL. AND RIGHTLY SO. OTHER MURDERERS HAVE BEEN PUT TO DEATH AND SO SHOULD THESE MASS MURDERERS.

IN HIS ESSAY “THE HUMANITARIAN VIEW OF PUNISHMENT,” C.S. LEWIS WRITES: “THE HUMANITARIAN VIEW REMOVES FROM PUNISHMENT THE CONCEPT OF DESERT. BUT THE CONCEPT OF DESERT IS THE ONLY CONNECTING LINK BETWEEN PUNISHMENT AND JUSTICE. IT IS ONLY AS DESERVED OR UNDESERVED THAT A SENTENCE CAN BE JUST OR UNJUST,”

LEWIS SAYS “IT APPEARS WE HAVE PASSED FROM THE HARSH AND SELF-RIGHTEOUS NOTION OF GIVING THE WICKED THEIR DESERTS TO THE CHARITABLE AND ENLIGHTENED ONE OF TENDING THE PSYCHOLOGICALLY SICK.

NO LONGER DO PEOPLE GET WHAT THEY DESERVE. IT IS PART OF WHAT MAKES OUR CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM UNJUST AND UNFAIR. THIS IS WHY WE ARE GETTING MORE CRIME. I’M CAL THOMAS.
