ASSAD’S FALL: WHAT’S NEXT?

CAL THOMAS COMMENTARY DECEMBER 10, 2024

IT’S NOT ALWAYS CAUSE FOR CELEBRATION WHEN EVIL DICTATORS FALL. WHAT FOLLOWS CAN BE WORSE. THINK IRAN WHEN THE SHAH WAS TOPPLED BY JIMMY CARTER AND REPLACED BY THE AYATOLLAHS.

THE SAME DEBATE WILL NOW TAKE PLACE AFTER THE FALL OF SYRIAN DICTATOR BASHIR AL-ASSAD. HE AND HIS FATHER RULED SYRIA FOR FIFTY YEARS. HE WAS DEPOSED OVER THE WEKENED BY REBELS WHO HAVE BEEN BATTLING THE REGIME FOR MORE THAN A DECADE.

PRESS REPORTS SAY THE REBELS ARE ISLAMISTS. IF SO, WILL THEY TURN SYRIA INTO ANOTHER ISLAMIC STATE WITH NEW THREATS AGAINST ISRAEL?

THE WALL STREET JOURNAL EDITORIALIZES THE FALL OF ASSAD IS A DEFEAT FOR RUSSIA, WHICH GRANTED HIM ASYLUM, AND ALSO IRAN WHICH HAD SUPPORTED ASSAD.

WHAT COMES NEXT IS THE QUESTION. IN SUCH MATTERS THERE IS ALWAYS AN OPPORTUNITY FOR FREEDOM. BUT THE WINDOW IS NOT OPEN FOR LONG. PRESIDENT-ELECT TRUMP SAYS IT’S NONE OF OUR BUSINESS. LET THE PLAYERS WORK IT OUT. ON THE OTHER SIDE ARE PEOPLE WHO BELIEVE IT IS OUR BUSINESS BECAUSE THE U.S. HAS A STRONG INTERTEST IN THE MIDDLE EAST. WE’LL SOON SEE WHICH SIDE WINS THE BATTLE FOR SYRIA AND THE POLITICAL AND DIPLOMATIC BATTLE IN THEN U.S. I’M CAL THOMAS.
