SYRIA: WHAT’S NEXT?

CAL THOMAS COMMENTARY DECEMBER 13, 2024

WITH THE FALL OF SYRIAN PRESIDENT BASHIR AL-ASAD, WHAT’S NEXT FOR THAT TROUBLED COUNTRY? THE HEAD OF THE REBELS, WHOSE GROUP HAS BEEN OFFICIALLY DESIGNATED AS A TERRORIST ORGANIZATION BY THE U.S., IS SAYING THE RIGHT THINGS ABOUT RELIGIOUS FREEDOM AND WOMEN NOT HAVING TO COVER-UP, BUT DOES HE MEAN IT? AND WHAT ABOUT SYRIA’S POLICY TOWARDS ISRAEL?

ONE SIGN THAT NOTHING HAS CHANGED COMES FROM ABDEL RAHIM ATOUN, THE HEAD OF THE SHURA COUNCIL OF TAHIR AL-SHAM, WHO RECENTLY HOSTED A RALLY IN SUPPORT OF HAMAS AND HAS CONSISTENTLY VOICED OPPOSITION TO THE JEWISH STATE.

ESPECIALLY WHEN A COUNTRY HAS HAD LEADERS WHO HAVE HELD TO POLICIES THEY CLAIM TO BE BASED IN ISLAM THAT MOTIVATES THEM TO ERADICTE ISRAEL AND KILL JEWS, THE UNITED STATES HAD BEST BE CAREFUL BEFORE WADING INTO THIS SITUATION. PRESIDENT-ELECT TRUMP HAS SAID WHAT IS HAPPENING IN SYRIA IS A CIVIL WAR AND NOT OUR FIGHT. BUT THE STABILITY OF THE MIDDLE EAST IS IN OUR INTEREST.

THE OUTGOING BIDEN ADMINISTRATION HAS A WAIT AND SEE ATTITUDE. THAT MAY BE OK FOR NOW, BUT THERE SHOULD BE A PLAN B. DOING NOTHING IS NOT AN OPTION. I’M CAL THOMAS.
