MLK’s Sayings

CAL THOMAS COMMENTARY JANUARY 18, 2021

TODAY IS THE NATIONAL HOLIDAY FOR MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR. KING WAS A MAN WHOSE PERSONAL FLAWS WERE FAR OUTWEIGHED BY HIS ACCOMPLISHMENTS.

HIS SAYINGS, EVEN TODAY, HAVE A PROFOUND EFFECT ON PEOPLE WHO READ THEM. HERE ARE A FEW: “LOVE IS THE ONLY FORCE CAPABLE OF TRANSFORMING AN ENEMY INTO A FRIEND.”

HERE’S ONE WITH SPECIAL RELEVANCE FOR TODAY’S DIVISIONS: “WE MUST DEVELOP AND MAINTAIN THE CAPACITY TO FORGIVE. HE WHO IS DEVOID OF THE POWER TO FORGIVE IS DEVOID OF THE POWER TO LOVE. THERE IS SOME GOOD IN THE WORST OF US AND SOME EVIL IN THE BEST OF US. WHEN WE DISCOVER THIS, WE ARE LESS PRONE TO HATE OUR ENEMIES.”

SUCH LOVE CAN TRANSFORM US SO WE NO LONGER SEE OTHERS AS ENEMIES.

HERE’S ANOTHER FROM DR. KING: “I HAVE DECIDED TO STICK WITH LOVE. HATE IS TOO GREAT A BURDEN TO BEAR.”

ONE MORE: “NONVIOLENCE IS ABSOLUTE COMMITMENT TO THE WAY OF LOVE. LOVE IS NOT EMOTIONAL BASH; IT IS NOT EMPTY SENTIMENTALISM. IT IS THE ACTIVE OUTPURING OF ONE’S WHOLE BEING INTO THE BEING OF ANOTHER.”

THE REAL MEANING OF LOVE IS IN SCRIPTURE, BUT DR. KING’S SAYINGS ARE WORTH PONDERING AND PRACTICING. I’M CAL THOMAS.
