Olympia Dukakis Dies

CAL THOMAS COMMENTARY MAY 4, 2021

THIS IS A DIFFERENT COMMENTARY FROM WHAT YOU MAY BE USED TO. IT ISN’T ABOUT POLITICS, BUT IT IS A LITTLE ABOUT CULTURE. IT IS ABOUT THE ACTRESS OLYMPIA DUKAKIS, WHO DIED LAST WEEK AT AGE 89.

I HAD HER AS A GUEST ABOUT FIFTEEN YEARS AGO ON MY OLD FOX SHOW CALLED “AFTER HOURS.” LIKE HER RELATIVE, MICHAEL DUKAKIS, SHE WAS A DEMOCRAT AND POLITICAL LIBERAL. HER NEPHEW WORKED AT FOX AT THE TIME AND THAT APPARENTLY WAS WHY SHE AGREED TO COME ON MY SHOW.

I QUOTED A LINE FROM ONE OF HER BEST FILMS “MOONSTRUCK.” SHE IS WALKING HOME WITH A COLLEGE PROFESSOR WHO ASKS IF HE CAN COME INTO HER HOUSE WITH HER. SHE REPLIES “NO.” HE ASKS “WHY NOT?” AND SHE SAYS, “BECAUSE I’M A MARRIED WOMAN AND I KNOW WHO I AM.”

PONDER THAT FOR A MOMENT. WHO THINKS LIKE THAT TODAY? GRANTED IT WAS A LINE WRITTEN FOR HER, BUT IT CONVEYED A PROFOUND MORAL THOUGHT AND I TOLD HER HOW MUCH I APPECIATED IT.

ONE OF THE BENEFITS OF THE PROFESSION GOD HAS CALLED ME TO IS THE PEOPLE I GET TO MEET. OLYMPIA DUKAKIS WAS ONE OF MY FAVORITES. I’M CAL THOMAS.
