CAL THOMAS COMMENTARY JUNE 23, 2021
IT’S ONLY LATE JUNE OF 2021 AND THE NEXT PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION ISN’T UNTIL NOVEMBER 2024, BUT TALK OF WHO THE REPUBLICAN NOMINEE WILL BE HAS ALREADY BEGUN.
AT THE WESTERN CONSERVATIVE SUMMIT IN COLORADO, FLORIDA GOVERNOR RON DESANTIS WON 74 PERCENT OF VOTES TO DONALD TRUMP’S 71 PERCENT. VOTERS COULD MAKE MORE THAN ONE CHOICE WHICH, IS WHY THE NUMBERS LOOK LIKE THAT. IT WAS THE FIRST TIME ANYONE CAN REMEMBER TRUMP’S APPROVAL SLIPPING.
WHILE TRUMP WAS BLAMED BY SOME VOTERS FOR MISHANDLING THE PANDEMIC, DESANTIS BRILLIANTLY ADDRESSED THE ISSUE AND CAME OUT ON TOP. HE OPENED THE STATE SOONER THAN ALMOST ANYONE AND FLORIDA’S ECONOMY HAS COME ROARING BACK.
DESANTIS, LIKE TRUMP, DOES NOT COWER IN THE FACE OF ATTACKS FROM THE LEFT BUT HIS RESPONSES ARE LESS PERSONAL THAN TRUMP’S AND HE USUALLY STICKS TO THE ISSUES, NOT HIS OPPONENT’S PERSONALITY. THAT IS A GOOD STRATEGY, ESPECIALLY IF HE WANTS TO WIN BACK THOSE SUBURBAN WOMEN VOTERS WHO ABANDONED TRUMP LAST YEAR.
AGAIN, IT’S EARLY, BUT DESANTIS IS ONE TO WATCH. YOU CAN TELL IF HIS STAR IS RISING WHEN THE MEDIA STEP-UP THEIR ATTACKS ON HIM. I’M CAL THOMAS.
