CAL THOMAS COMMENTARY APRIL 27, 2022
ONE OF MY FAVORITE POLITICAL CARTOONS WAS ON THE COVER OF A PREVIOUS BOOK CALLED “LIBERALS FOR LUNCH.” ARTIST WAYNE STASYKAL DEPICTED TWO PILGRIMS WHO HAD JUST ARRIVED IN AMERICA KNEELING TO PRAY ON THE BEACH. A POLICEMAN TELLS THEM, “YOU CAN’T PRAY HERE. THIS IS A PUBLIC BEACH.”
I THOUGHT OF THAT CARTOON WHEN THE SUPREME COURT HEARD ARGUMENTS MONDAY ABOUT WHETHER A HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL COACH SHOULD BE ALLOWED TO KNEEL ON THE 50 YARD LINE AND PRAY AFTER GAMES. HE DIDN’T ENCOURAGE ANY PLAYER TO PRAY WITH HIM, THOUGH SOME VOLUNTARILY DID. THE SCHOOL FIRED HIM.
THIS IS DISCRIMINATION AGAINST THE FREE EXERCISE OF RELIGION THAT THE CONSTITUTION UPHOLDS. THE COACH’S NAME IS JOE KENNEDY (NO RELATION TO THE POLITICAL KENNEDY FAMILY).
WRITING IN THE WALL STREET JOURNAL, KENNEDY SAYS: “UNLESS THE SUPREME COURT RULES IN MY FAVOR, TEACHERS COULD BE FIRED FOR PRAYING OVER THEIR LUNCH IN THE CAFETERIA IF STUDENTS CAN SEE THEM. THIS DOESN’T SEEM LIKE THE CONSTITUTION I FOUGHT FOR IN THE MARINE CORPS.”
IT ISN’T BECAUSE IT HAS BEEN SKEWED BY LIBERAL JUDGES. NOW THAT THERE IS A CONSERVATIVE MAJORITY, LET’S HOPE THE COURT RULES IN FAVOR OF COACH KENNEDY. WE SHOULD PRAY THAT THEY DO. I’M CAL THOMAS.
