CAL THOMAS COMMENTARY JULY 24, 2024
IT DOESN’T HAPPEN OFTEN IN WASHINGTON – SOMEONE TAKING RESPONSIBILITY FOR A FAILURE AND THEN RESIGNING FROM THEIR JOB.
BUT THAT RARE OCCURANCE HAPPENED YESTERDAY WHEN KIMBERLEY CHEATLE RESIGNED AS DIRECTOR OF THE SECRET SERVICE, ONE DAY AFTER DISASTROUS TESTIMONY BEFORE A HOUSE OVERSIGHT COMMITTEE WHICH SAW BOTH REPUBLICANS AND DEMOCRATS IN A RARE DEMONSTRATION OF UNITY CALLING UPON HER TO QUIT.
IN HER TESTIMONY, CHEATLE SAID THE REASON AGENTS WERE NOT POSTED ON TOP OF THE BUILDING WHERE THE SHOOTER FIRED HIS WEAPON IN AN ATTEMPT TO ASSASSINATE FORMER PRESIDENT DONALD TRUMP WAS BECAUSE THE ROOF WAS TOO HOT AND THE SLOPE OF THE ROOF WAS TOO STEEP. THAT WAS SHOWN TO BE UNTRUE WHEN MEMBERS OF A CONGRESSIONAL DELEGATION GOT UP ON THE ROOF. AT FIRST, CHEATLE TOLD THE COMMITTEE SHE WOULDN’T QUIT BUT THE PRESSURE APARENTLY BECAME TOO MUCH, OR MAYBE SHE WAS OFFERED A DIFFERENT JOB. THE INVESTIGATION WILL – AND SHOULD – CONTINUE.
THIS WAS A TOTAL SECURITY FAILURE THAT NEARLY COST TRUMP HIS LIFE. SOME ON SOCIAL MEDIA WISH IT HAD. IT CAN ONLY GET NASTIER. I’M CAL THOMAS.
