CAL THOMAS COMMENTARY SEPTEMBER 20, 2019
WE SHOULD NOT BE MERCENARIES FOR SAUDI ARABIA IN ITS HOSTILE RELATIONS WITH IRAN. SO SAYS NEW YORK TIMES COLUMNIST NICHOLAS KRISTOFF. HE IS RIGHT.
THE U.S. SAYS IRAN WAS BEHIND THE DRONE ATTACK ON SAUDI OIL REFINERIES. WE SAY WE HAVE PROOF BASED ON SATELLITE IMAGES AND THE TRAJECTORY OF THE DRONES. WE’VE HEARD THIS BEFORE, MOST NOTABLY IN THE WEAPONS OF MASS DESTRUCTION SUPPOSEDLY POSSESSED BY IRAQ’S SADDAM HUSSEIN, WHICH WERE NEVER FOUND AND GOT US INTO A WAR THAT WAS DUBIOUS AT BEST.
WE DON’T NEED ANOTHER EXPENSIVE ENGAGEMENT IN THE MIDDLE EAST THAT COSTS BILLIONS AND POSSIBLY MORE AMERICAN LIVES IF IRAN RETALIATES. WE’VE SOLD THE SAUDIS SOPHISTOCATED MILITARY EQUIPMENT AND AIRPLANES. LET THEM TAKE ON IRAN IF THEY WISH. WE CAN OFFER ASSISTANCE, BUT THE MIDDDLE EAST IS AN ENDLESS PIT. WE SHOULD STAY OUT OF IT TO THE EXTENT POSSIBLE. THIS MIGHT HAVE THE ADDED BENEFIT OF SPARING ISRAEL A RETALIATORY STRIKE FROM IRAN. IT COULD GET VERY BAD VERY QUICKLY. WE ARE BETTER OFF NOT ENGAGING IN ANOTHER WAR. I’M CAL THOMAS.
