The (Latest) Israeli Election

CAL THOMAS COMMENTARY SEPTEMBER 23,2019

WHAT TO MAKE OF THE RECENT ISRAELI ELECTION? FOR SOME INSIGHT I ASKED FORMER ISRAELI DIPLOMAT YORAM ETTINGER. HE SAYS WHILE BENJAMIN NETANYAHU HAS CHANGED OVER THE YEARS HE IS STILL BETTER THAN ANY OF HIS OPPONENTS.

ETTINGER ADDS: “THE OUTCOME OF THE SECOND ELECTION CAMPAIGN IN HALF A YEAR ATTESTS TO THE STATE OF THE NON-FUNCTIONING ISRAELI POLITICAL SYSTEM. HOW SAD THAT (AMERICA’S) POLITICAL SYSTEM (WHICH ISN’T PERFECT) IS PARTLY BASED ON BIBLICAL PRECEDENTS, WHILE THE POLITICAL SYSTEM OF THE JEWISH STATE IS BASED ON FAILED EUROPEAN SYSTEMS.”

ETTINGER DESCRIBES NETANYAHU RIVAL AND POSSIBLE CO-PRIME MINISTER IN ANY UNITY GOVERNMENT, BENNY GANTZ, AS A “NICE FELLOW”, BUT HE IS NOT IMPRESSED WITH GANTZ’S GRASP OF WIDER REGIONAL AND GLOBAL AFFAIRS, NOR WITH US AND US-ISRAELI TIES. HE SAYS MOST OF GANTZ’S POLITIAL COLLEAGUES ARE DOVES AND HIS CANDIDATE FOR DEFENSE SECRETARY, GABI ASHKENAZI, SUPPORTED A GIVEAWAY OF THE GOLAN HEIGHTS IN THE AFTERMATH OF THE OSLO ACCORD.

LAND FOR PEACE HAS BEEN TRIED AND FAILED. ISRAEL’S ENEMIES WILL NOT BE DETERRED. ONE WOULD THINK THE LEFT SHOULD KNOW THIS. I’M CAL THOMAS.
