CAL THOMAS COMMENTARY APRIL 3, 2020
JUST TWENTY-SEVEN DAYS TO GO, BEFORE WHAT? IT’S THE LATEST DEADLINE ESTABLISHED BY THE TRUMP ADMINISTRATION FOR POSSIBLY – POSSIBLY – RE-OPENING THE COUNTRY FOR BUSINESS. CAN WE WAIT THAT LONG AND WHAT IF THEY EXTEND THE LOCKDOWN FOR ANOTHER MONTH? PRESIDENT TRUMP IS EVEN TALKING ABOUT A POSSIBLE NATIONAL LOCKDOWN. WHAT WOULD THAT DO TO OUR ECONOMY? MIGHT IT NEVER COME BACK TO WHERE IT WAS?
THIS IS NOT ONLY A MEDICAL AND SCIENTIFIC DECISION, IT IS ALSO A POLITICAL AND ECONOMIC ONE. OPEN TOO SOON AND IF THE VIRUS SPREADS, MANY MORE WILL DIE. STAY CLOSED AND THERE WILL BE MORE JOB LOSSES AND BUSINESS CLOSURES, SOME FOR GOOD.
WHAT TO DO? RUSH LIMBAUGH THINKS WE HAVE TO RE-OPEN WITH PRECAUTIONS SUCH AS MASKS, HAND WASHING AND SOCIAL DISTANCING. THAT STRATEGY SEEMS TO BE WORKING IN JAPAN WHERE BUSINESSES ARE OPEN AND PEOPLE ARE WALKING AROUND WITH MASKS.
AS THE PRESIDENT HAS NOTED, A LITTLE MORE THAN A MONTH AGO OUR ECONOMY WAS ROARING AND THEN SUDDENLY A FORCED SHUTDOWN. THIS IS WHY WE HAVE LEADERS TO MAKE IMPORTANT DECISIONS. THEY HAD BETTER MAKE THE RIGHT ONES. I’M CAL THOMAS.
