BIPARTISANSHIP

CAL THOMAS COMMENTARY JANUARY 9, 2025

THE WORD “BIPARTISAN” IS TOSSED AROUND IN WASHINGTON A LOT, ESPECIALLY WHEN LIBERAL DEMOCRATS ARE IN THE MINORITY. IT USUALLY MEANS REPUBLICANS AND CONSERVATIVES (NOT ALWAYS THE SAME) HAVE TO GIVE IN TO DEMOCRATS’ DEMANDS.

REAL BIPARTISANSHIP TOOK PLACE THIS WEEK WHEN THE HOUSE PASSED WHAT’S CALLED THE “LAKEN RILEY ACT,” NAMED AFTER A 22-YEAR-OLD NURSING STUDENT IN ATHENS, GEORGIA WHO WAS BRUTALLY MURDERED BY A VENEZUELAN ILLEGAL IMMIGRANT.

THE BILL WOULD IMPOSE HARSHER PENALTIES ON PEOPLE WHO ARE IN THE COUNTRY ILLEGALLY AND WHO ARE ARRESTED FOR CRIMES, LIKE BURGLARY, THEFT, LARCENY AND SHOPLIFTING. THE VOTE WAS 264-159 WITH 48 DEMOCRATS JOINING REPUBLICANS IN VOTING FOR THE BILL. WHAT AMAZES, AS SPEAKER MIKE JOHNSON NOTED, IS NOW MANY DEMOCRATS VOTED AGAINST THE MEASURE. HOW COULD ANYONE OPPOSE MORE PROTECTIONS ESPECIALLY FOR YOUNG WOMEN AND HARSHER PENTALTIES FOR CRIMINAL ILLEGAL ALIENS? IF THE DEMOCRATS WANT TO KEEP LOSING ELECTIONS, THEY WILL KEEP VOTING AGAINST POLICIES A MAJORITY OF AMERICANS WANT, AS DEMONSTRATED IN THE LATEST ELECTION. I’M CAL THOMAS.
